Parks of Puglia

Among the parks of Puglia we find a small but significant selection of varying sizes and landscapes.
Two of Italy's 25 national parks are in the Puglia region and with the largest of those being the vast Gargano National Park in the Province of Foggia. The park was established in 1991 and occupies a territory of 1,181 km² on the Gargano Peninsula. The Peninsula has a hilly interior of plains and forests but is most famous for its coastline which is home to some of Puglia's most famous seaside resorts and a series of beaches. The coastline is characterised by its white rocks of irregular shapes and secluded bays of clear water. |
Further to the south in the Metropolitan City of Bari province is the Alta Murgia National Park which offers something of a contrast to the Gargano Peninsula. The Alta Murgia is a limestone block that reaches an elevation of 600 metres above sea level and covers an area of 677 km². It's a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers who can enjoy landscapes of hills, plains and pick out wildlife such as the lesser kestrel.
