The Cannae battlefield site is located in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. It lies near the town of Canosa di Puglia.
The site is most famous for the Battle of Cannae, which took place in 216 BC during the Second Punic War between the forces of Carthage, led by Hannibal, and the Roman Republic. This battle is renowned for its strategic brilliance, as Hannibal's tactics resulted in one of the most significant victories in military history, showcasing his mastery of battlefield maneuvering and encirclement tactics. The archaeological site includes a visitor centre which explains the story further. |
